What Does Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica have in Common?

Pigmentation, Richard Branson and Dermalogica….

It is interesting how different people’s skins are, it is almost a tell tale life story on their face. Skin never lies and there is no hiding the fact if it has been abused, diseased, neglected, stressed or a host of many other underlying factors.

I notice that I am seeing a lot more skin with pigmentation and age spots coming through my Dermalogica Skin Care Centre these days. Most of these clients are in the baby boomer generation and are now having to deal with past sins in the sun and to be fair it is not all their fault as a lot more is known about sun damage now.

How do we treat this problem with Dermalogica and Skin Treatments?

Well firstly I would prescribe a product that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation that will help to brighten, balance uneven pigmentation, help breakup and prevent future pigmentation and illuminate the skin. A tall order you may think but there are actually ingredients out there that do achieve this.

Another problem is hypo pigmentation this occurs when there is a decrease of pigmentation in the skin therefore white spots or small patches appear on the skin.

Vitamins can help in removing pigmentation from the skin especially vitamin A and C as these vitamins normalise the skin and stop the production of tyrosinase which activates the production of melanin (brown pigment).

Richard Branson’s Skin and the Signs of Sun Damage

Jennifer "Beauty Dermalogica Guru" Meets Richard Branson

Me and Richard Branson

On a recent visit to Melbourne I was fortunate to attend a cocktail party where Sir Richard Branson had been invited. He is a very interesting positive person and he mentioned he spends six months in the year on his beautiful Caribbean Necker Island. Every morning whilst he is on the island he goes for a ninety minutes swim around the island usually on his own.

Now while this is so good for his healthy mind and body it was beginning to tell on his neck and face by the sun damage that was starting to show on his skin (you know being a skin therapist I can’t help looking at people’s skin and being this close to Sir Richard you just can’t help to look!) Sir Richard Branson’s hair looked in fabulous condition and he definitely keeps in shape but I would have loved the opportunity to work on his skin and make that too, glow with health!

IPL or Intense Pulse Light is a great way of treating hyper pigmentation cause by excess sun exposure and usually gives fabulous results. Microdermabrasion or glycolic peels are also a great way to prep the skin first before IPL as the results I find are even better. Also about four weeks after IPL a microdermabrasion or glycolic peel is a superb treatment to have for improving the look of the skin even more.

Sunscreens either physical or chemical should always be worn all year as ultraviolet light is always present and ready to pounce on unprotected skin. Go for an SPF30 broad spectrum sunscreen and one that is a skin treatment too like Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 – I love this one. Dermalogica also has sunscreens for oily, sensitive, inflammatory skin, dry skin and skin’s that like a tinted sun block.

Pigmentation is not choosy on its victims, many celebrities and famous people suffer from it (aswell as everybody else) and it is not always on the face, damage can occur anywhere that has been sun damaged.

Choose products that do not contain hydroquinone which is a bleaching cream and is banned in most countries. There can be severe allergic reactions to this product such as a rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue, blistering blue-black darkening of the skin, cracking or excessive dryness, redness, stinging or irritation and this is not all the list of side effects that can occur.

Dermalogica Chromawhite Range

Dermalogica Chromawhite C-12 Concentrate is great for brightening, lightening and repairing the skin but even better is Dermalogica Chromawhite TRX Brightening Kit which has the complete range of six products which will all target uneven skin with a potent range of active ingredients. MD Formulations also have a great illuminating range which includes a serum and a masque.

Priori Skin Care too has very active products called Even Tones which is said to have given 92% reduction in pigmentation in just eight weeks.

If you are looking for a natural skin brightener then Priori Coffeeberry Brightening Facial Complex is for you. This 98.5% natural product is made by priori and has been specifically designed for reducing the appearance of uneven skin tones. It is ideal for irregular pigmentation, sun damaged skin and was developed by scientists (no doctors) and delivers the most advanced science and therefore the best ant aging results.

Dermalogica Age Smart – Why You Need to Use this Skin Care Range if you’re Concerned with Ageing

The Power of Dermalogica Age Smart

If like me you want to continue to look as young as possible for as long as possible, then you are just going to love the Dermalogica age smart range of products and what they can do for your skin. Perhaps you feel you need a step up in your current product

Dermalogica Age Smart - Your Ageing Defense!

Dermalogica Age Smart - Your Ageing Defense!

range – as we all get bored, our skin does too. Then there are those of us who want to prevent the first signs of ageing and keep that dewy fresh young looking skin for as long as possible! Well isn’t it great to know that the Dermalogica Age Smart range will cover all these concerns.
It would have been great to have the fantastic ingredients that the Age Smart Range offers to me, when I was in my twenties so I could have started on it then but for me I use Dermalogica Age Smart Range to help slow down the ageing process and to give me a weapon against further damage.

Dermalogica Age Smart and Glycation

One of the processes of ageing in skin is glycation which is an internal chemical reaction within the body that eventually causes cross-linked collagen (resulting in wrinkles and loss of elasticity), inflammation and the slowdown of cell growth.
Glycation is a result of when sugar comes into contact with a protein (such as collagen) it reacts immediately and generates damaging free radicals that do damage to the cells and cause inflammation. There are many diseases that are associated with glycation such as people who are diabetic (as they have high levels of sugar in their blood and suffer from various health issues).

Glycation is also associated with many diseases of the brain, muscle weakness and heart disease as well as speeding up the ageing process. Reducing glycation is what scientists now believe will help slow down the ageing process and disease formation.

Dermalogica’s Peptide Technology

One of the active ingredients that help control glycation is a polypeptide molecule known as arginine/lysine. This polypeptide acts as a sugar trap and binds to the sugar in the body making it unable to react with proteins and cause glycation, therefore slowing down the ageing process.
This amazing polypeptide ingredient (arginine / lysine) can be found in the following Dermalogica Age Smart products – Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist, Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30, Dermalogica Super Rich Repair and Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex.

I personally love the Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30, it feels so silky smooth and the hydration on the skin lasts for ages and even better a SPF30 which gives my skin fantastic protection without that oily, gluggy feel.
As I have already mentioned inflammation in the skin is another ageing process and anyway we can lessen the impact of this, will definitely be to our advantage. Colloidal Oatmeal, Evening Primrose Oil and Chrysantheumum Parthenium Extract reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier, helps to retain moisture levels and calms irritated skin – Dynamic Skin Recovery is a Winner :)

Free Radical Damage and Why I Love to Use Dermalogica’s Antioxidant Hydramist!

Free Radical Damage is also a big no no as far as ageing is concerned. The body has some great defence against these usually in the forms of vitamins, enzymes and some foods that we digest. We are always producing free radical damage and as we get older it gets worse. UV light, oxygen, pollutants, smoking, etc and although some of us, eat a vitamin rich diet the skin is often the last to get its supply of antioxidants so we need to make sure our skin get adequate supplies of topically applied antioxidants so we can help to repair the damage to collagen, elastin, DNA and tissue degradation.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to do this is by using Dermalogica’s Age Smart Antioxidant Hydramist on clean skin under your dermalogica moisturiser or other dermalogica skin care products. By using this twice a day I find it gives me an instant firming action to lift and tighten my skin and bathes my skin in refreshing hydration – you should try this!

Dermalogica Age Smart and the Effects of UV Damage

UV Damage is another ageing menace to the skin it strikes with no mercy and presents itself either early as sun burnt skin or later in the form of pigmentation and age spots (you can actually see the damage what will eventually show up on your face, with a special tool called a skin scanner), loss of elasticity, formation of wrinkles due to breakdown of collagen, skin cancer, leathery dried out skin – the list goes on – not a pretty picture and even though we may protect ourselves now, the damage has probably been done already.
If you get the chance, check out the skin scanners that are available in the professional skin care centres. Not only will the therapist be able to see your skin damage so will you too! That picture will ensure you will always use sun protection and if you are too lazy to apply a moisturiser and a sunscreen, do what I do and get the Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 which has both. You can even get mineral make ups with sunscreen protection in, so there is not really an excuse anymore for not wearing sunscreen protection every day.

Inika Cosmetics have sunscreen in there organic mineral makeup range and the amazing Priori Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals is fabulous, as it always improves your skin’s condition and can be applied as a dry sunscreen for children to wear.
Getting back to UV Damage one of the best things to do for your skin would be to use the Age Smart Dermalogica Map 15 Regenerator. It has a cocktail of high performing revolutionary ingredients to dramatically improve UV damage.

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque for Post Party-Pooped Skin!!!

Dermalogica Masque

Skin Hydrating Masque is Great for Dehydrated Skins

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque

If your skin is feeling dry, parched or tight, a hydrating masque can do wonders at restoring dehydrated skin – thanks to too much alcohol, smoky environments, excessive caffeine and not enough water. Dermalogica Skin hydrating Masque if you’ve never tried it before is a moisture-rich hydrating gel in a bitter orange flower base (it smells really nice btw) that will take any dull, dehydrated skin and instantly revitalise it.

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Masque is oil-free and is calming making it suitable for all skin types and it can be even used around your delicate eye and lip area to plump out dry, fine lines and add vital moisture what is needed around any ones eyes!

I find it great on a very hot day in Australia, I put this dermalogica masque in the fridge, making it nice and cool and apply it around my eyes – Excellent for de-puffing and calming down any redness.

This dermalogica masque comes in handy especially when travelling – I’ve actually gone on a plane wearing this! (it’s clear so no one can tell) to keep my skin intact on long flights and minimise dehydration thanks to air travel.

Dermalogica Masque – Skin hydrating Masque Benefits

Dermalogica Masque – Skin Hydrating Masque Video

Panthenol is used to intensely hydrate your skin, reduce tightness and dry patches. It’s great how it reduces inflammation, it’s packed with calming botanicals such as bitter orange, hops, cucumber  and arnica montana flower all helping to cool your skin down.

It’s even loaded with vitamins C an E to combat the effects of environmental damage and stress on your skin. It’s great for anyone that has acne as it won’t cause breakouts or clog your skin but will intensely hydrate your skin (without the oil) – great if your breakouts have become dry and flaky, and this dermalogica masque calms irritation and inflammation from breakouts quickly and effectively.

You can boost the hydration of this dermalogica masque by applying Skin Hydrating Booster first to your skin and then apply Skin hydrating Masque over the top.

The great thing about this dermalogica masque is every time I use it and remove it, my skin is instantly really calm, refreshed and full of much needed moisture. You can use this dermalogica masque up to three times a week if needed (especially if your really dehydrated) and it’s best to use after exfoliating and allow Skin Hydrating Masque to activate for 10 to 15 minutes.

Dermalogica’s Oil-Free Sunscreen That Can Be Mixed With Any Liquid Foundation

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF30

Dermalogica Solar Defense

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF30

Dermalogica Solar defense booster is a fantastic sunscreen for all skin conditions and has the benefit of being mixed with your favourite dermalogica moisturiser or foundation. Bare in mind though that when you mix it with equally the same amount of moisturiser the SPF decreases from SPF30 to SPF17. Therefore if you want to have the full SPF30 protection use it alone, over the top of your dermalogica moisturiser.

Solar defense booster is a chemical sunscreen formulated with specific ingredients to give you full spectrum protection. The key ingredients that provide optimum protection are Avobenzone, Octinoxale, Octisalate and Oxybenzone, these sunscreens work by absorbing the damaging ultraviolet rays and protecting your skin. Dermalogica Sunscreens must be applied approximately thirty minutes before venturing out in the daylight as anytime spent in the daylight counts as time when your skin is exposed to the sun.

Dermalogica Solar Defense Boosteris a joy to use as it is lightweight, non-greasy and feels really good on the skin as it glides on. It comes in a very handy size too, just right to pop it into your pocket or purse so you can top up at anytime. I LOVE the fact that not only does Solar Defense Booster protect my skin, it also has highly active botanical extracts and vitamins in it to help combat premature ageing. Vitamin C and E improves skin softness and smoothness and helps control damage caused by free radicals and the soothing botanical extracts of grapeseed and green tea provide antioxidant protection.

Solar defense Booster also calms and soothes the skin with Balm Mint Leaf and Coneflower whilst Sodium PCA which is a moisture binding protein acts as a humectant to allow for more effective moisture absorption. All these goodies to give you the best protection as well as being highly beneficial for your skin. When you apply dermalogica solar defense booster make sure you use a good tea spoon size full for your face and apply using upward strokes. It’s really good for oily skin types and skin prone to breakouts, there are many different types of dermalogica sunscreens available and I have written more about them in this dermalogica blog.

The Dermalogica Body Lotion Thats Also a Sunscreen

dermalogica sunscreen

Dermalogica Sunscreen Multivitamin Body Block is a Great Body Moisturiser

Dermalogica Sunscreen Multivitamin Body Block

Dermalogica Sunscreen – Multivitamin Body Block SPF20Not all sunscreens are made the same and you have to decide whether you want to truly do the best for your skin in protection, safety and maintaining hydration. There are numerous sunscreens on the market so why should you use dermalogica multivitamin body block on your skin?

For starters it is a luxurious daily body lotion which intensely moisturises, hydrates and conditions your skin. It’s a non-greasy, non-sticky formula, even sand doesn’t stick to it, making it ideal for the beach – This is a BIG PLUS as nobody wants to feel like a big grease ball with sand sticking to every crevice on your body (like other sunscreens).

Dermalogica Multivitamin Body Block absorbs extremely fast and leaves a velvety non-greasy layer on your skin. Obviously safety is a major factor so it is comforting to know that Multivitamin Body Block contains the latest sunscreen technology to ensure you are protected against UVA and UVB photo-damage and this sunscreen evens helps you recover from previous damage.

Multivitamin Body Block is SPF20

Why SPF20? Why is this dermalogica sunscreen not SPF30? Well as this is a daily body moisturiser do you really want to apply all the extra chemicals it takes to make it SPF30 far better to reapply more often. It’s good to know that dermalogica is right up there giving us UV smart booster technology as Multivitamin Body Block contains an encapsulated complex of antioxidants C and E that scavenge UV induced free radicals any time the sun is exposed to UV, this mean using this – is less ageing for you!

Dermalogica Sunscreen – Key Ingredients

Let’s talk about the key ingredients and what they are going to do for your skin.

  • Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate and Oxybenzone are the chemical sunscreens that provide optimum UVA and UVB protection for your skin.
  • Shea Butter, Evening Primrose Oil, Glycolipids and Hylauronic Acid help maintain hydration and smooth skin.
  • Panthenol aids in skin repair and hydration
  • A complex of vitamins C and E guard against free radicals and ageing of the skin.
  • Doesn’t this sound Better than Just Sun Protection? I wouldn’t dream of driving – leaving the house without my daily protection of multivitamin body block to exposed areas of my skin (I think it’s a great hand cream BTW).

Application of sunscreen is also important. Generally about one teaspoon for the face and a full ounce (approx 1/8 cup) for complete body coverage. Also make sure you reapply sunscreen whenever you swim, exercise or sweat a lot. Remember it is always better to over apply than to scrimp!

If you have a sunscreen sensitivity then an SPF20 would be a better choice for you as there is less chance of irritation than an SPF30. The dermalogica sunscreens protect you from both UVB and UVA (aging) Rays, they are free from artificial colours and fragrance and will not clog your pores or cause breakouts.

Party Skin Can Be Yours With Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Masque That Can Transform Anyone’s Skin into a Vibrant, Healthy, Complexion-Reviver!

Dermalogica Age Smart Power Recovery Masque

Dermalogica Age Smart Power Recovery Masque

Dermalogica Age Smart Power-Packed Masque

If you want your skin to look your best during the party season then you must invest in doing a dermalogica age smart face masque minimum ‘weekly’ to boost your complexion and get some serious health benefits back into your skin.

Dermalogica Power Recovery Masque is a multivitamin cocktail of potent ingredients that simple soothe, nourish, hydrate and plump up the skin and you see an improvement instantly with every use – it’s no wonder this is the-must have dermalogica masque to use when you are going out and wanting your skin to look radiant.

If you want your make up to glide on your skin properly and look good, then dermalogica power recovery masque is the way to go, it helps get rid of those fine dryness, crêpe lines from too much partying i.e. dehydration and gives your skin an instant boost a GLOW that comes from the inside out.

The secret is from the potent vitamins that are in this dermalogica age smart masque and it’s incredibly repairing and healing properties it has on your skin.

What I LOVE LOVE LOVE about this dermalogica masque is it actually contains five percent panthenol also known as pro-vitamin B5. This is great news because a five percent concentration of panthenol cream has been shown in studies to reduce healing time in your skin DRAMATICALLY! It also has the amazing ability to rapidly penetrate deep into your skin (that’s why you see an instant result – and this is one reason why all dermalogica skin care therapists have this masque as their Top-Pick!). Just a side note many products out there contain panthenol but are in a concentration of one percent or less – this means THEY DO NOTHING FOR YOUR SKIN – As I always say – “You Get What You Pay For in Life!”

As it penetrates deep down into your skin it also stimulates your collagen making fibroblasts into action and because it is so incredibly healing to your skin, if you have any sensitivity what so ever – this is a great masque to use. It’s actually very creamy on your skin, smells great, has a wonderful texture and is a yellow-orange colour. In fact after you wash off this masque you can still feel it deep in your skin and he effects lasts for hours.

Besides Panthenol it’s also boosted with the active-vitamins of A, C, E and F (vitamin F is an essential fatty acid). Vitamin F, I love especially for anyone who has really dry skin because not only does it moisturise your skin it reduces any dryness and restores the natural barrier function on the surface of your skin – so such a great masque to use for sensitivity.

The Vitamin C in Dermalogica Power Recovery Masque is in the form of Ascorbyl Palmitate – which is a form of vitamin C which is more stable and penetrates better into your skin. By using this dermalogica masque you are getting an ample dose of Vitamin C that will stimulate more collagen production (i.e. that is why your skin looks plumper) but also stops the enzymes that break down your collagen and elastin at the same time – GENIUS!

Vitamin E which is a great antioxidant is used for its antioxidant properties but is also smoothes your skin incredibly and helps your skin increase its moisture content.

Vitamin A in the form of Retinyl Palmitate this protects your skin against dehydration, improves the texture of your skin and also helps to reverse the signs of aging.

Think of this dermalogica masque as Five Five Five, because it contains five percent panthenol, five percent algae extract and five percent betaglucan – which is an extremely high amount! This masque really is POTENT – You Really Have Got to Try it!

Dermalogica Power Recovery Masque is Jam-Packed With Goodness!

So far you can see how powerful this masque is but it’s also full of more amazing active ingredients that work to calm and soothe your skin. It has Algae Extract which besides being full of nutrients it softens your skin incredibly.

These are the soothing and calming ingredients in the dermalogica masque – Liquorice, Comfrey, Burdock and Rhizone Root Extracts which all work to de-sensitize your skin and the most incredible anti-inflammatory ingredient Oats! (You can see why it’s a therapist Best Friend).

While this masque is not a true dermalogica Age Smart Line (i.e. it does not work on glycation, or MMP’s – see my other posts on these) It does quench the free-radicals thanks to the high-amount of antioxidants in this product and it really does restore your skin and makes it look like peaches and cream for when you want your skin to look instantly better – Enjoy!

Silky, Smooth, Soft Skin Can Be Yours With Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Thermafoliant

I am in love with Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Thermafoliant!

Dermalogica Age Smart Thermafoliant
Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant For Skin So Smooth and Soft!

Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant is an amazing two-in-one dermalogica age smart product that gives great results. It polishes the skin, gently removing dull skin cells, leaving your skin feeling incredibly smooth

and so sensationally soft and gives it an irridiscient fresh glow immediately. It’s a powerful physical  dermalogica exfoliant that exfoliates and smooths your skin but at the same time address the key triggers of aging.

The aging factors I am talking about are free-radical formations, glycation end products and Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMP’s) that trigger the break down of collagen – Not going into detail about these here today!

First up this dermalogica exfoliant actually contains Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid these are alpha and beta hydroxy acids that stimulate exfoliation on your skin leaving it smoother, plus it’s boosted with Magnesium Oxide Granules that at the same time immediately polishes away dead skin cells helping to minimise fine lines and smooth out the texture of your skin, kind of like a Microdermabrasion Effect (this is not added as a gimmick. These granules remove the excess cells to allow maximum penetration of the active vitamins into the skin).

In this Dermalogica Age Smart Product we have the power of the Lactic and Salicylic Acid, plus the Microdermabrasion Granules Effect, but it’s formulated in a waterless formula that allows the Vitamins A, C and E and Soybean Extractto penetrate into your skin, and when you add water to the dermalogica exfoliant it actually heats up to allow all of those active ingredients to penetrate further using thermal technology, your skin is left amazingly smooth with better texture and you can feel it heat up on your skin.

Dermalogica also added Prickly Pear Extract this boosts the exfoliation process, and Licorice is added to reduce any irritation and help reduce pigmentation – as usual dermalogica always add an anti-inflammatory into the product, to calm and soothe the skin.

It also has White Teathat has brilliant antioxidant properties and also inhibits the collagen-degrading enzymes (MMPs), Soybean Extract is also used as it’s a great antioxidant that fights free radicals and also stimulates new collagen formation whilst stopping the formation of glycation in the skin – WOW it’s pretty good what can be put into skin care products these days. Check out my dermalogica multivitamin thermafoliant video below.

This dermalogica age smart exfoliant you have got to experience, it’s great for an immediate result and I find it fantastic to use if you are going out and you want to give your skin that instant lift! Another fabulously created dermalogica product.

You can use dermalogica’s multivitamin thermafoliant in two ways.

How To Use Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant

First after cleansing with your dermalogica cleanser apply to damp skin in circular motions for about one to two minutes (make sure you do not apply around your eyes)

and then wash off and follow with your normal dermalogica moisturiser and dermalogica sunscreen. The second way gives you an intense result- Just apply it to clean dry skin and rinse with warm water.

It’s recommended that you exfoliate two to three times a week. It’s not suitable for sensitive skin-types or anybody who is taking and medically prescribed exfoliation products or has waxed recently. Be smart with this dermalogica exfoliant and don’t over use!

Have You Tried Dermalogica’s Age Smart Potent Lip Complex?

Dermalogica's Age Smart Lip Complex

Peptide-Packed Lip Product - Not Your Average Lip Balm

Dermalogica Age Smart Renewal Lip Complex

Dermalogica Age Smart Renewal Lip Complex to get moist juicy lips you need to do more than just use an everyday lip balm. Lips are fragile things, one day they can be nice, plump and juicy and the next dry, cracked and sore.

In-fact not caring for your lips is a sure way to start getting those tell-tale feathering lip aging lines. Dehydration of the lips can cause them to shrivel up, dry out and crack (have you noticed the older you get the thinner you lips get?)

Most people reach for their balm when this happens but some ingredients in certain products can cause more damage to your lips and make them even more drier and you end up in a never ending cycle of applying more balm to compensate (not realising that the balm causes them to dry out).

Dermalogica suggest to avoid using lip products that contain artificial colours like Red D and C dyes, artificial fragrances, lanolin wax, Isopropyl Esters and Myristyl Lactate on the lip area to name a few. Any inflammation is a known precursor to the aging cycle so make sure you use a good quality lip product and check the ingredients.

If this was not enough assault to our lips as we age and our lips dry out naturally (thanks to UV damage, pollution, cold weather and inflammation). Dermalogica have made the Age Smart Renewal Lip Complex to help smooth and condition the delicate lips fast. The active balm contain many moisturising natural plant oils that smooth your lips and help prevent and repair any damaging cracks.

The balm itself is a very thick consistency and feels different to a gloss, the balm will actually condition your lips for around three to four hours and with regular use will make your lips really silky soft and smooth.

You can use the renewal lip complex as a primer before applying your lipstick and it helps to reduce those dreaded contour lines, I find it best to use as a night time treatment for my lips and it’s recommended that you use the Age Smart Balm morning and night to get maximum results, apply it after applying your eye cream

Besides the conditioning oils dermalogica have added there polypeptide that acts as a sugar trap and binds sugar to the peptide stopping the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the lips (also known as glycation) and reducing fine lines, preventing the signs of aging.

The Renewal Lip Complex also contains Palmitoyl Oligopeptide an ingredient that helps to restore the collagen in the lips and keeping them fuller for longer. Along with added vitamin E for it’s healing and hydrating properties and it’s help at fighting free radical damage, this dermalogica lip balm is amazing, you will really notice the difference with your lips, it’s the best lip product I have ever tried contains nothing harmful and smoothes uneven texture, another great addition to dermalogica’s Age Smart Line.

Dermalogica’s Extra Rich Face Block – Do You Know How Good This is?

Extra Rich Face Block

Dermalogica's Sunscreen Extra Rich Face Block

Extra Rich Face Block SPF30

Before I tell you about dermalogica’s extra rich face block, I wanted to learn about sunscreens. It may come to no surprise to you that the sun’s rays causes aging. The UV radiation from the sun in forms of UVA and UVB rays are responsible for making us look old and can lead to cancer. The UVA rays or “aging rays” I like to call them penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB rays and 99% of photo aging is caused from UVA rays. The impact of these rays coming into contact with our skin causes the breakdown of our collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles and loss of elasticity, pigmentation can develop (the little brown marks) and the DNA of our skin’s cells can also be altered and mutated.

There were only two ways to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays, from either a chemical sunscreenwhich filters out the harmful spectrum of rays or physical sunscreen which reflects the UV rays. The problem with the physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide is they can make you look really white.

Dermalogica has developed a new technology into there new sunscreen range which takes the physical sunscreens and micronises the formula so you do not get that white appearance on your skin but not altering the sunscreens particles, allowing you to still get maximum protection from the sun.

When looking at sunscreens an SPF30 still only filters out around 96% of the sun’s UV rays, this means that 4% of the rays still can access our skin and cause damage in the form of free radicals. Dermalogica have now added a new defence to there sunscreens by combing the sunscreen with vitamins E and C to give you enhanced photo protection. This is in a form of a intelligent DNA capsule that contains the active vitamins C and E. This capsule that contains the vitamins sits on the surface of your skin keeping the vitamins nice and active and when the skin is exposed to UV radiation the capsules bursts open and the vitamins are released onto the skin! This is just a start of what is in Extra Rich Face Block.

Let’s Have a Look at Dermalogica’s Sunscreen For Really Dry or Premature Aging Skins

Besides the new updated vitamin capsule technology in this combined chemical and physical sunscreen it is packed with hydrating ingredients for skin’s that are staved of moisture. The actual cream is a really rich texture perfect for dry skin conditions and nourishes the skin with borage seed oil, evening primrose oil and vitamin E, helping to retain moisture levels. This really is a moisturiser with added sunscreen protection, if you use Intensive Moisture Balance this is ideal daytime moisturiser/sunscreen for you to use.

To keep your skin looking smooth and help maintain the natural moisture levels in your skin this dermalogica sunscreen has added hyaluronic Acid, Urea and Algae Extracts to give your skin a boost. What really excites me most about this sunscreenis dermalogica have added peptides into the formulation giving you a really active moisturiser with superior sunscreen protection. Palmitoyl Tetra-Peptide and Palmitoyl Oligopeptide both work at triggering your collagen to produce and firm the skin’s tissues and restore elasticity. If you find that your skin takes it’s time reforming back into position if you lift it slightly – You need this!

Vitamins For Skin Care – Why Do You Need Them and What They Do

Vitamins in Dermalogica

Dermalogica Vitamins

You Need Topical Vitamins For Skin Health

Have you ever wondered why we need vitamins in skin care? I mean we can buy supplements of vitamins and they are in the food that we eat. Why should we be bothered in investing in good vitamins for your face? I am going to explain what vitamins do to help improve your skin, which vitamins to look out for and which dermalogica products have vitamins in them.

Why Do We Need Vitamins in Skin Care?

Vitamins are used in skin care products to help protect the skin from free radical damage, aging and environmental damage. But just any old vitamins will not do! Vitamins are complex, not only do you have to look at the type of vitamin used but also the percentage and if it is stable and can penetrate the skin, for example.

Vitamins also work better in groups rather than just individual vitamins in skin care, when choosing skin care with vitamins look for vitamins C and E together, not just E. Today many people take vitamin supplements for there health, this is great, however you cannot expect these vitamins what you take internally really help improve your skin. Vitamin supplements will always go to your body’s major organs first, and what is left (which would be hardly anything) will go to your skin that is why to maximise your skin’s health you need to apply topical vitamins.

When looking at vitamins in skin care not only do they have to be able to penetrate the skin, they must be stable enough so they do not lose there potency and effect. Vitamins are wonderful addition to skin care because they protect your skin against free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to your skin’s cells, allowing them to mutate and this sets off a chain reaction causing the cell to be broken down by the body and this causes the break down of your collagen (allowing wrinkles to form), breaking down your moisture and hydration (hylauronic acid content) and also reduces the elasticity in your skin. In fact free radicals cause damage to just about everything in the cell. Free radicals are caused mainly by smoking, pollution and UV rays.

Vitamins That Will Protect Your Skin Used in Dermalogica

You can see why vitamins in skincare are very important and every time you apply them you are getting instant relief to your skin. A fantastic dermalogica moisturiser which has losts of vitamins and antioxidants is Intensive Moisture Balance – it has vitamins A,C,E Ginko biloba, Grape Seed Extract, Super Oxide Dismutase and Green Tea, all of these ingredients are fantastic for premature aging. Super Oxide Diemutase is a naturally occuring substance in our bodies that prevents the free radical Super Oxide. This is one of the worst free radicals that cause premature aging in the skin – it’s great to know dermalogica use super oxide dismutase in Intensive Moisture Balance.

Sunscreens are also another way to gain extra protection by the inclusion of antioxidants in them such as dermalogica’s Extra Rich Face Block which not only has it’s UV Smart Booster Technology, but Two Collagen Regenerating Peptides, extra hydration from Hylauronic Acid and SPF30 protection – another product I think is fantastic.

Vitamins Can Be A Double-Edged Sword

It’s great how vitamins protect our skin from free radical damage, however not a lot of people realise that vitamins cannot protect our skin from free radicals forever, in fact after a vitamin has been attacked by a free radical for so long, it actually turns itself into a free radical! One way to helping to prevent this is look for vitamins that are together in a skin care product, let me explain…. Vitamin E is a great vitamin it’s very healing and hydrating for the skin, however after being attacked by free radicals (only 50 times) it oxidises and turns into a free radical itself. Scientists have discovered that by using vitamins E and C together this helps prevent this. Vitamin C recharges or boosts Vitamin E, preventing it from turning into a free radical – Amazing!

There are many vitamins to consider and what they do are unique so I am not going to go into them there in this post, just remember that you need to inlcude topical vitamins in your skin care routine to help prevent premature aging and protect your skin.
