Dermalogica Age Smart – Why You Need to Use this Skin Care Range if you’re Concerned with Ageing

The Power of Dermalogica Age Smart

If like me you want to continue to look as young as possible for as long as possible, then you are just going to love the Dermalogica age smart range of products and what they can do for your skin. Perhaps you feel you need a step up in your current product

Dermalogica Age Smart - Your Ageing Defense!

Dermalogica Age Smart - Your Ageing Defense!

range – as we all get bored, our skin does too. Then there are those of us who want to prevent the first signs of ageing and keep that dewy fresh young looking skin for as long as possible! Well isn’t it great to know that the Dermalogica Age Smart range will cover all these concerns.
It would have been great to have the fantastic ingredients that the Age Smart Range offers to me, when I was in my twenties so I could have started on it then but for me I use Dermalogica Age Smart Range to help slow down the ageing process and to give me a weapon against further damage.

Dermalogica Age Smart and Glycation

One of the processes of ageing in skin is glycation which is an internal chemical reaction within the body that eventually causes cross-linked collagen (resulting in wrinkles and loss of elasticity), inflammation and the slowdown of cell growth.
Glycation is a result of when sugar comes into contact with a protein (such as collagen) it reacts immediately and generates damaging free radicals that do damage to the cells and cause inflammation. There are many diseases that are associated with glycation such as people who are diabetic (as they have high levels of sugar in their blood and suffer from various health issues).

Glycation is also associated with many diseases of the brain, muscle weakness and heart disease as well as speeding up the ageing process. Reducing glycation is what scientists now believe will help slow down the ageing process and disease formation.

Dermalogica’s Peptide Technology

One of the active ingredients that help control glycation is a polypeptide molecule known as arginine/lysine. This polypeptide acts as a sugar trap and binds to the sugar in the body making it unable to react with proteins and cause glycation, therefore slowing down the ageing process.
This amazing polypeptide ingredient (arginine / lysine) can be found in the following Dermalogica Age Smart products – Dermalogica Antioxidant Hydramist, Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30, Dermalogica Super Rich Repair and Dermalogica Renewal Lip Complex.

I personally love the Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30, it feels so silky smooth and the hydration on the skin lasts for ages and even better a SPF30 which gives my skin fantastic protection without that oily, gluggy feel.
As I have already mentioned inflammation in the skin is another ageing process and anyway we can lessen the impact of this, will definitely be to our advantage. Colloidal Oatmeal, Evening Primrose Oil and Chrysantheumum Parthenium Extract reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier, helps to retain moisture levels and calms irritated skin – Dynamic Skin Recovery is a Winner :)

Free Radical Damage and Why I Love to Use Dermalogica’s Antioxidant Hydramist!

Free Radical Damage is also a big no no as far as ageing is concerned. The body has some great defence against these usually in the forms of vitamins, enzymes and some foods that we digest. We are always producing free radical damage and as we get older it gets worse. UV light, oxygen, pollutants, smoking, etc and although some of us, eat a vitamin rich diet the skin is often the last to get its supply of antioxidants so we need to make sure our skin get adequate supplies of topically applied antioxidants so we can help to repair the damage to collagen, elastin, DNA and tissue degradation.

One of the easiest and quickest ways to do this is by using Dermalogica’s Age Smart Antioxidant Hydramist on clean skin under your dermalogica moisturiser or other dermalogica skin care products. By using this twice a day I find it gives me an instant firming action to lift and tighten my skin and bathes my skin in refreshing hydration – you should try this!

Dermalogica Age Smart and the Effects of UV Damage

UV Damage is another ageing menace to the skin it strikes with no mercy and presents itself either early as sun burnt skin or later in the form of pigmentation and age spots (you can actually see the damage what will eventually show up on your face, with a special tool called a skin scanner), loss of elasticity, formation of wrinkles due to breakdown of collagen, skin cancer, leathery dried out skin – the list goes on – not a pretty picture and even though we may protect ourselves now, the damage has probably been done already.
If you get the chance, check out the skin scanners that are available in the professional skin care centres. Not only will the therapist be able to see your skin damage so will you too! That picture will ensure you will always use sun protection and if you are too lazy to apply a moisturiser and a sunscreen, do what I do and get the Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 which has both. You can even get mineral make ups with sunscreen protection in, so there is not really an excuse anymore for not wearing sunscreen protection every day.

Inika Cosmetics have sunscreen in there organic mineral makeup range and the amazing Priori Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals is fabulous, as it always improves your skin’s condition and can be applied as a dry sunscreen for children to wear.
Getting back to UV Damage one of the best things to do for your skin would be to use the Age Smart Dermalogica Map 15 Regenerator. It has a cocktail of high performing revolutionary ingredients to dramatically improve UV damage.

Dermalogica’s Oil-Free Sunscreen That Can Be Mixed With Any Liquid Foundation

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF30

Dermalogica Solar Defense

Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF30

Dermalogica Solar defense booster is a fantastic sunscreen for all skin conditions and has the benefit of being mixed with your favourite dermalogica moisturiser or foundation. Bare in mind though that when you mix it with equally the same amount of moisturiser the SPF decreases from SPF30 to SPF17. Therefore if you want to have the full SPF30 protection use it alone, over the top of your dermalogica moisturiser.

Solar defense booster is a chemical sunscreen formulated with specific ingredients to give you full spectrum protection. The key ingredients that provide optimum protection are Avobenzone, Octinoxale, Octisalate and Oxybenzone, these sunscreens work by absorbing the damaging ultraviolet rays and protecting your skin. Dermalogica Sunscreens must be applied approximately thirty minutes before venturing out in the daylight as anytime spent in the daylight counts as time when your skin is exposed to the sun.

Dermalogica Solar Defense Boosteris a joy to use as it is lightweight, non-greasy and feels really good on the skin as it glides on. It comes in a very handy size too, just right to pop it into your pocket or purse so you can top up at anytime. I LOVE the fact that not only does Solar Defense Booster protect my skin, it also has highly active botanical extracts and vitamins in it to help combat premature ageing. Vitamin C and E improves skin softness and smoothness and helps control damage caused by free radicals and the soothing botanical extracts of grapeseed and green tea provide antioxidant protection.

Solar defense Booster also calms and soothes the skin with Balm Mint Leaf and Coneflower whilst Sodium PCA which is a moisture binding protein acts as a humectant to allow for more effective moisture absorption. All these goodies to give you the best protection as well as being highly beneficial for your skin. When you apply dermalogica solar defense booster make sure you use a good tea spoon size full for your face and apply using upward strokes. It’s really good for oily skin types and skin prone to breakouts, there are many different types of dermalogica sunscreens available and I have written more about them in this dermalogica blog.

The Dermalogica Body Lotion Thats Also a Sunscreen

Dermalogica Sunscreen Multivitamin Body Block is a Great Body Moisturiser

Dermalogica Sunscreen Multivitamin Body Block

Dermalogica Sunscreen – Multivitamin Body Block SPF20Not all sunscreens are made the same and you have to decide whether you want to truly do the best for your skin in protection, safety and maintaining hydration. There are numerous sunscreens on the market so why should you use dermalogica multivitamin body block on your skin?

For starters it is a luxurious daily body lotion which intensely moisturises, hydrates and conditions your skin. It’s a non-greasy, non-sticky formula, even sand doesn’t stick to it, making it ideal for the beach – This is a BIG PLUS as nobody wants to feel like a big grease ball with sand sticking to every crevice on your body (like other sunscreens).

Dermalogica Multivitamin Body Block absorbs extremely fast and leaves a velvety non-greasy layer on your skin. Obviously safety is a major factor so it is comforting to know that Multivitamin Body Block contains the latest sunscreen technology to ensure you are protected against UVA and UVB photo-damage and this sunscreen evens helps you recover from previous damage.

Multivitamin Body Block is SPF20

Why SPF20? Why is this dermalogica sunscreen not SPF30? Well as this is a daily body moisturiser do you really want to apply all the extra chemicals it takes to make it SPF30 far better to reapply more often. It’s good to know that dermalogica is right up there giving us UV smart booster technology as Multivitamin Body Block contains an encapsulated complex of antioxidants C and E that scavenge UV induced free radicals any time the sun is exposed to UV, this mean using this – is less ageing for you!

Dermalogica Sunscreen – Key Ingredients

Let’s talk about the key ingredients and what they are going to do for your skin.

  • Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate and Oxybenzone are the chemical sunscreens that provide optimum UVA and UVB protection for your skin.
  • Shea Butter, Evening Primrose Oil, Glycolipids and Hylauronic Acid help maintain hydration and smooth skin.
  • Panthenol aids in skin repair and hydration
  • A complex of vitamins C and E guard against free radicals and ageing of the skin.
  • Doesn’t this sound Better than Just Sun Protection? I wouldn’t dream of driving – leaving the house without my daily protection of multivitamin body block to exposed areas of my skin (I think it’s a great hand cream BTW).

Application of sunscreen is also important. Generally about one teaspoon for the face and a full ounce (approx 1/8 cup) for complete body coverage. Also make sure you reapply sunscreen whenever you swim, exercise or sweat a lot. Remember it is always better to over apply than to scrimp!

If you have a sunscreen sensitivity then an SPF20 would be a better choice for you as there is less chance of irritation than an SPF30. The dermalogica sunscreens protect you from both UVB and UVA (aging) Rays, they are free from artificial colours and fragrance and will not clog your pores or cause breakouts.

Dermalogica’s Smart Moisturiser For Premature Aging

Dermalogica Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30

Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery

Dermalogica Age Smart Potent Moisturiser

If you’re concerned about ageing and want more than just a moisturiser that only hydrates your skin then dermalogica dynamic skin recovery is just for you. If you are aware of the dermalogica age smart range you will know how good it is and dynamic skin recovery is no different.

It’s a moisturiser but it also helps your skin fight skin aging free radicals (not that much different from the other dermalogica moisturisers) however the key thing about this dermalogica product is it actually helps your skin fight against the damaging effects of glycation.

Glycation is a new term what is floating around in the skin care industry; it’s the reaction between sugars (glucose) and amino groups in proteins. Collagen is a protein and as a result the sugar reacts with it (known as glycation) causing glycation and free radical damage. The result from this process is inflammation (which accelerates the aging process), the loss of collagen and elastin and also can stop skin cell growth.

The scary thing is our body cannot reverse the glycation process or remove it. Dermalogica however when developing the Age Smart line has discovered a peptide molecule that can act as a ‘sugar trap’ allowing the sugar in the body to bind to it. The peptide is known as Arginine/Lysine polypeptide and thankfully this is included in this moisturiser, providing to your skin an anti-glycation effect!

Yes is new technology, but it’s amazing that we now have a moisturiser that can help protect our skin from this. Dermalogica are starting to use more and more peptides in there formulas and in this dermalogica moisturiser again they have added another peptide known as Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5.

This peptide is amazing, I mean it really is clever it actually activates tissue growth in your skin, it’s a skin-firming peptide and also stops the process of the enzymes that are responsible for breaking down collagen.

Dynamic Skin Recovery Moisturiser

Ok, this moisturiser really feels creamy on the skin, but not on the thick and heavy scale, it’s rich but not thick and it’s jam-packed with moisture usch as hylauronic acid to provide maximum skin hydration. It’s got glycosamine in there which not only fights the glycation process but it stimulates the production of collagen and hylauronic acid in your skin.

Evening Primrose Oil is in this moisturiser and you can tell and feel how it repairs your skin and helps keep it hydrated and it last’s throughout the day. As aging and inflammation go and in hand, it’s no wonder that dermalogica have included ingredients such as Colloidal Oatmeal – which is an absolutely brilliant calmer of skins (I use this a lot in my treatments for anyone with extremely sensitized skin conditions) and Feverfew Extract which helps to calm irritated skin types.

Free radical damage from pollution, smoke and everything else bad around us and White Tea Extract helps to protect our skin against this but it’s also incredibly good at helping with preventing glycation in the skin a really potent and good antioxidant is White Tea.

When you use this creamy moisturiser you will notice how incredibly calming and hydrating it is and will now be happy in the fact that it’s doing all of those amazing things I mentioned above! It’s a daytime moisturiser and it does contain an SPF30. I find it does not leave my skin with any white residue that a lot of sunscreens can, it blends really well and the hydration lasts all day and make up goes on over the top great. Don’t forget that UV is the major cause of skin aging so make sure that if you are going out in the sun all day that you reapply for that extra protection. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery is more suitable for anyone with premature aging. I have seen client’s skin’s fine lines vanish from using this daily, it’s really good for anyone with a dry, dehydrated skin type.

Salicylic Acid – The Hydroxy Acid of Choice For Anyone Who Suffers With Acne

Dermalogica Peptides

Dermalogica's Powerful Peptides

Salicylic Acid for Breakouts

Salicylic acid can be found in many over-the-counter beauty products these days. You will normally find salicylic acid in products for breakouts because it is an effective hydroxy acid for acne and has the ability to reduce the spots and bumps on the skin.

Salicylic Acid is found in Willow Bark and it is a Beta Hydroxy Acid(BHA). It works differently to popular glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid, by continually shedding the dead skin cell build up layer by layer, thinning the surface of the skin.

Salicylic Acid is antibacterial and even though salicylic acid seems to be more powerful than glycolic acid it actually has anti-inflammatory action on the skin as well, making this a perfect ingredient of choice when you are prone to breakouts.

Salicylic acid is oil soluble, this is great because it can actually penetrate the pores and remove the debris in them that causes breakouts. Glycolic acid on the other hand is water-soluble and not as effective for acne, but great for other skin types, which I won’t discuss here.

Any product containing salicylic acid at a concentration of 2% plus will be exfoliating to the skin, anything below this will be antibacterial.

If you are pregnant or breast feeding it is best not to use any product with this ingredient in and using any hydroxy acid product will make your skin become more sensitive to sunlight, this means make sure you wear your sunscreen everyday and reapply when out in the day light.

If you are taking any medically prescribed acne products or are allergic to aspirin, you should not use salicylic acid or any other exfoliating products and I would advise to consult your doctor before starting to implement this ingredient into your skin care routine.

If you have sensitive skin, salicylic acid may irritate it and if you experience any burning or irritation discontinue use, additional information and warnings can be found on the individual skin care products containing salicylic acid.

Salicylic Acid and Dermalogica

Dermalogica has always used a variety of different exfoliation ingredients in their skin care line and it is of no surprise to find that they use salicylic acid in their main acne range dermalogica medibac.

Below you will find the dermalogica skin care products that contain salicylic acid, I have tried to list as many of them as possible off the top of my head, I hope I have not missed any out, but it’s interesting to see the percentages and you can work out how effective the product is going to be at exfoliating the pores with salicylic acid or if it’s used just for it’s antibacterial benefits.

Please bear in mind that some of the below products have different hydroxy acids in them such as lactic acid or papain, to work in different ways on the skin and I have not listed all of the ingredients here only the Salicylic Acid content.

Dermalogica Skin Care – My Favourite Dermalogica Product To Use When Going For a Dirty Weekend

Dermalogica Skin Care – What I LOVE To Use When Going Away For The Weekend
SOS Dermalogica Skin Care
Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture Comes in Handy When Going Away

Dermalogica skin care products are wonderful but when you are going away for the weekend (and your like me :) ) you pack four of your favourite pairs of shoes, six outfits to choose from and enough make up to warrant it’s own case, hence not that much room for my dermalogica skin care.

Having travelled a lot lately, my dermalogica skin care products do weigh-a-ton and if I can save a few kilo’s and room in my case – I will (I am a serious shopper-holic). Anyway, I have recently fell back in love with Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture - Have you ever tried this day time moisturiser before? I tried it when it came out a few years ago, but I decided to give it another try and have re-discovered how wonderful this product is for when I go away for the odd weekend!

I am not saying use it when you go away, that is just the way I find works perfect for me – for ONE MAJOR REASON – I cannot be bothered to put all of my make up on! I like to chill out and relax so to speak when I am away with just my husband and the Sheer Tint Moisture in the medium is ideal. I find I take less products with me (hence it’s a three-in-one product), it gives me a natural looking coverage and has SPF15 coverage. The hydration is a little on the light side for my skin type (it’s oil-free), I use the hydrating booster underneath sometimes, the consistency is between active moist and skin smoothing cream (dermalogica’s other moisturisers) – That is why I use it occasionally, but if you have a combination skin type this would be perfect for you to use every day.

One of my pet hates is re-applying sunscreen throughout the day. To get effective sun protection throughout the day, you need to re-apply regularly. This can be hassle for anyone who wears a lot of make up and it’s hassle for me, but what I find to be great is dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Moisture, I apply it in the morning and I can re-apply straight over the top of it, during the day (every two hours!) I have been known to apply dermalogica’s Solar Booster over my mineral make up when I have been stuck, but I have to practise what I preach – Be Smart When it Comes to Sunscreen, Wear it and Re-Apply during the day.

A big plus for me is convenience, if you have a daughter in her teens and worried about her applying sunscreen when she’s out during the summer, get her this product, she will really like it and she can just apply it and reapply throughout the day, no dramas.

Let’s have a look at this dermalogica skin care product and see if it will benefit your skin.

Sheer Tint Moisture SPF15

This dermalogica moisturiser comes in three skin-normalising shades (light, medium, dark) and also untinted. Have a look at the picture to see the shades on my skin. The actual tint is from Iron Oxide Earth Minerals giving you a nice colour wash and increasing your skin’s radiance. There is absolutely no artificial colours in this product or any of the dermalogica skin care range. This moisturiser does NOT give you a heavy foundation look, I emphasize “wash of colour”. If you have clear skin, you will love it, if your skin is problem prone and you use alot of make up, you will need to apply foundation over the top.

Why Should You Use It?

If you are a busy-bee, take lots of trips, go to the beach often, play lots of sports – you will love it – for it’s ease of use. If you are a teenager it’s great (it’s oil-free) and will not cause you to break out. It’s a convenient way to hydrate protect and even out your skin.

What are the Ingredients in the Sheer Tint Moisture Range?

Besides the Iron oxides, this dermalogica skin care product uses chemical and physical sunscreens to protect against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. It also contains lots of antioxidants to protect the skin against free radicals such as walnut seed and olive fruit extract. In fact the olive fruit extract really gives you a high level of antioxidant protection.

This dermalogica moisturiser is not greasy, is light-weight and oil-free. It really does contain some fabulous ingredients that can hydrate your skin. There’s panthenol to maintain your hydration levels, and lots of humectants such as sorbitol, glycerin and urea (humectants bind water to your skin).

They have even included lactic acid and sodium lactate which are naturally found in your skin and these help to hydrate and condition your skin.

I really like how dermalogica added dimethicone into this moisturiser, not only does it make the moisturiser glide on nice to your skin but it’s brilliant at reinforcing the barrier properties of your skin, so your skin’s level of hydration is maintained  and stops moisture loss.

Dermalogica Skin Care Sheer Tint Moisture

Theres more to sheer tint moisture than meets the eye, you can see why it’s one of my picks for a weekend-wonder away (remember to pack a night time moisturiser!)

What do you think to dermalogica skin care and dermalogica’s sheer tint moisture? Tell me what you think?

Dermalogica’s Extra Rich Face Block – Do You Know How Good This is?

Extra Rich Face Block

Dermalogica's Sunscreen Extra Rich Face Block

Extra Rich Face Block SPF30

Before I tell you about dermalogica’s extra rich face block, I wanted to learn about sunscreens. It may come to no surprise to you that the sun’s rays causes aging. The UV radiation from the sun in forms of UVA and UVB rays are responsible for making us look old and can lead to cancer. The UVA rays or “aging rays” I like to call them penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB rays and 99% of photo aging is caused from UVA rays. The impact of these rays coming into contact with our skin causes the breakdown of our collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles and loss of elasticity, pigmentation can develop (the little brown marks) and the DNA of our skin’s cells can also be altered and mutated.

There were only two ways to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays, from either a chemical sunscreenwhich filters out the harmful spectrum of rays or physical sunscreen which reflects the UV rays. The problem with the physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide is they can make you look really white.

Dermalogica has developed a new technology into there new sunscreen range which takes the physical sunscreens and micronises the formula so you do not get that white appearance on your skin but not altering the sunscreens particles, allowing you to still get maximum protection from the sun.

When looking at sunscreens an SPF30 still only filters out around 96% of the sun’s UV rays, this means that 4% of the rays still can access our skin and cause damage in the form of free radicals. Dermalogica have now added a new defence to there sunscreens by combing the sunscreen with vitamins E and C to give you enhanced photo protection. This is in a form of a intelligent DNA capsule that contains the active vitamins C and E. This capsule that contains the vitamins sits on the surface of your skin keeping the vitamins nice and active and when the skin is exposed to UV radiation the capsules bursts open and the vitamins are released onto the skin! This is just a start of what is in Extra Rich Face Block.

Let’s Have a Look at Dermalogica’s Sunscreen For Really Dry or Premature Aging Skins

Besides the new updated vitamin capsule technology in this combined chemical and physical sunscreen it is packed with hydrating ingredients for skin’s that are staved of moisture. The actual cream is a really rich texture perfect for dry skin conditions and nourishes the skin with borage seed oil, evening primrose oil and vitamin E, helping to retain moisture levels. This really is a moisturiser with added sunscreen protection, if you use Intensive Moisture Balance this is ideal daytime moisturiser/sunscreen for you to use.

To keep your skin looking smooth and help maintain the natural moisture levels in your skin this dermalogica sunscreen has added hyaluronic Acid, Urea and Algae Extracts to give your skin a boost. What really excites me most about this sunscreenis dermalogica have added peptides into the formulation giving you a really active moisturiser with superior sunscreen protection. Palmitoyl Tetra-Peptide and Palmitoyl Oligopeptide both work at triggering your collagen to produce and firm the skin’s tissues and restore elasticity. If you find that your skin takes it’s time reforming back into position if you lift it slightly – You need this!
