Christmas Party Season is Coming – Is Your Face up to it?

Spring is quickly coming to an end and before we know it summer will be here and Christmas events and parties will be written in your dairy. Now is the time to take a look at your skin and prepare it for the party season, with some of the quick fix Dermalogica Products.

One of the things you might notice are signs of skin dehydration, this usually presents itself as fine lines across the surface of your skin, especially when you lightly press the skin together with your fingers.

Dehydration is not good because it can make your skin appear older and can lead to sensitivity. Even though you can be extremely good at drinking your quota of water it is not necessarily going to magically hydrate your skin as your internal organs and circulation, digestion and every other organ will get in first.

To ensure that any additional hydrators that you apply to your skin are able to penetrate to their full potential you need to ensure that the skin is exfoliated first. Exfoliation is extremely important and gives lots of benefits besides letting the hydrators do their job.

There are different types of exfoliators too and it is very important that the correct ones are used for “your” skin condition. Exfoliation removes clogging surface debris allowing for optimal absorption of treatment ingredients, polishes the skin to create a smooth surface, sloughs off dead skin cells, speeds up cell turnover, brightens the skin and improves suppleness to the skin.

Exfoliation is something you can do at home and Dermalogica have a great range for each skin condition. From breakout prone and aging skin to hyper-pigmentation and dry, dehydrated skin. Exfoliation is important to the health and appearance of all skin conditions.

The ideal amount of exfoliation is one day of intense exfoliation with seven days of gentle exfoliation. If you wish to exfoliate deeper or speed the process along I would suggest you make an appointment with a skin care professional for a skin treatment.

I personally love Dermalogica Daily Resurfacer which I use at night after cleansing and leave on under my moisturiser. Just applying in circular movements all over my face so that it can work during the night. Daily Resurfacer is a combination of chemical and physical exfoliants that resurfaces, smoothes and brightens to improve all over skin clarity.

In the morning I use the perfect partner for Daily Resurfacer which is Daily Microfoliant. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant gently sloughs off all the debris that has been produced during the night from daily resurfacer. There are lots of combinations in the Dermalogica range and one that will be perfect for you too.

Well now that you are perfecting your exfoliation the next stage is adding a booster or serum to super saturate your skin with intense moisture.  I love and strongly recommend Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster, this little beauty instensly moisturises thirsty skin as it smoothes and minimises fine lines.

One of the ingredients in Dermalogica’s Skin Hydrating Booster is Hyaluronic acid which should become your best friend as it holds a thousand times its weight in moisture and improves elasticity. It is ideal for the eye and lip areas showing dryness line.

One of the best things about dermalogica skin hydrating booster is that it is not oily so your face does not feel like it is being smothered with a greasy film, therefore your makeup is still fine to apply. I can’t say enough praise for this product as it restores the skin’s critical moisture levels, revitalises parched skin, minimises fine lines and is nutrient rich.

Just five or six drops of this product for your face and neck applied onto clean skin under your moisturiser will give you the results you need.

Well now you have exfoliated and targeted dehydration your skin should be well on the way to party mode – but I still have some more tips to get that beautiful skin glow!

Get a ‘WOW’ Effect With Dermalogica’s Age Smart Skin Resurfacing Cleanser!

Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser

dermalogica age smart
Dermalogica Age Smart Cleanser that Gives Super Smooth Results

Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser has to be one of the best cleansers in the dermalogica line and this is a new cleanser from dermalogica’s age-fighting Age Smart Range. If you like really super smooth lovely soft skin this is it! I have tried many different alpha hydroxy acid lactic acid cleansers before but it’s amazing how this cleanser actually does soften and smooth your skin instantly, you only need to use this dermalogica cleanser once for you to see and feel the difference, results are amazing.

How does this age smart cleanser get your skin so soft, smooth and clean? Let’s have a look at the ingredients and the way it works on your skin.

Dermalogica Age Smart Cleanser Ingredients

This skin resurfacing cleanser is designed to be a two in one cleanser that cleanses and exfoliates your skin at the same time. You only need to do one cleanse with this cleanser, but make sure you use dermalogica’s Precleanse before using this cleanser to get perfect clean skin results.

Lactic Acidis what gives you that wonderfully smooth effect on your skin from this dermalogica cleanser. It contains five percent Lactic Acid that is enough to give you that incredibly smooth feeling but also helps to brighten and hydrate your skin from within. On first time use you may experience tingling sensation on your skin and this is a normal effect, however do not use it around your eyes or get it in your eyes – it will sting like CRAZY! If you find this cleanser burns your skin, it’s not for you and you would be best to try dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser.

You have got to try and see how smooth your skin is from this cleanser and try out the half face test. Wash your face one side with skin resurfacing cleanser and the other side with any other cleanser, wash your skin and dry it off and then pat your skin dry and feel the difference, it really does feel clean and fresh.

Why would dermalogica put this much Lactic Acid into this age smart cleanser?
Because cleansing your skin prepares your skin for the actives in the dermalogica age smart to penetrate evenly and deeper into your skin, there is no point using dermalogica’s MAP-15 Regenerator if you are not effectively preparing your skin beforehand in the correct way.

As we get older our skin can become more sensitive and this dermalogica age smart cleanser has added Rose Flower Oil which helps to calm your skin from any irritation and Vitamin Eis added to help smooth your skin and provide antioxidant protection. Vitmin E is also a great preservative and you will be happy to know that dermalogica skin resurfacing cleanser is paraben-free.

Vitamin E applied topically does help improve the smoothness of your skin and has great anti-inflammatory properties.

If you really need a cleanser I think it’s worth giving dermalogica skin resurfacing cleanser a go, particularly if you are concerned with keeping your skin looking good for longer and improving it’s current condition.

Silky, Smooth, Soft Skin Can Be Yours With Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Thermafoliant

I am in love with Dermalogica’s Multivitamin Thermafoliant!

Dermalogica Age Smart Thermafoliant
Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant For Skin So Smooth and Soft!

Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant is an amazing two-in-one dermalogica age smart product that gives great results. It polishes the skin, gently removing dull skin cells, leaving your skin feeling incredibly smooth

and so sensationally soft and gives it an irridiscient fresh glow immediately. It’s a powerful physical  dermalogica exfoliant that exfoliates and smooths your skin but at the same time address the key triggers of aging.

The aging factors I am talking about are free-radical formations, glycation end products and Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMP’s) that trigger the break down of collagen – Not going into detail about these here today!

First up this dermalogica exfoliant actually contains Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid these are alpha and beta hydroxy acids that stimulate exfoliation on your skin leaving it smoother, plus it’s boosted with Magnesium Oxide Granules that at the same time immediately polishes away dead skin cells helping to minimise fine lines and smooth out the texture of your skin, kind of like a Microdermabrasion Effect (this is not added as a gimmick. These granules remove the excess cells to allow maximum penetration of the active vitamins into the skin).

In this Dermalogica Age Smart Product we have the power of the Lactic and Salicylic Acid, plus the Microdermabrasion Granules Effect, but it’s formulated in a waterless formula that allows the Vitamins A, C and E and Soybean Extractto penetrate into your skin, and when you add water to the dermalogica exfoliant it actually heats up to allow all of those active ingredients to penetrate further using thermal technology, your skin is left amazingly smooth with better texture and you can feel it heat up on your skin.

Dermalogica also added Prickly Pear Extract this boosts the exfoliation process, and Licorice is added to reduce any irritation and help reduce pigmentation – as usual dermalogica always add an anti-inflammatory into the product, to calm and soothe the skin.

It also has White Teathat has brilliant antioxidant properties and also inhibits the collagen-degrading enzymes (MMPs), Soybean Extract is also used as it’s a great antioxidant that fights free radicals and also stimulates new collagen formation whilst stopping the formation of glycation in the skin – WOW it’s pretty good what can be put into skin care products these days. This dermalogica age smart exfoliant you have got to experience, it’s great for an immediate result and I find it fantastic to use if you are going out and you want to give your skin that instant lift! Another fabulously created dermalogica product.

You can use dermalogica’s multivitamin thermafoliant in two ways.

How To Use Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant

First after cleansing with your dermalogica cleanser apply to damp skin in circular motions for about one to two minutes (make sure you do not apply around your eyes)

and then wash off and follow with your normal dermalogica moisturiser and dermalogica sunscreen. The second way gives you an intense result- Just apply it to clean dry skin and rinse with warm water.

It’s recommended that you exfoliate two to three times a week. It’s not suitable for sensitive skin-types or anybody who is taking and medically prescribed exfoliation products or has waxed recently. Be smart with this dermalogica exfoliant and don’t over use!

Salicylic Acid – The Hydroxy Acid of Choice For Anyone Who Suffers With Acne

Dermalogica Peptides

Dermalogica's Powerful Peptides

Salicylic Acid for Breakouts

Salicylic acid can be found in many over-the-counter beauty products these days. You will normally find salicylic acid in products for breakouts because it is an effective hydroxy acid for acne and has the ability to reduce the spots and bumps on the skin.

Salicylic Acid is found in Willow Bark and it is a Beta Hydroxy Acid(BHA). It works differently to popular glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid, by continually shedding the dead skin cell build up layer by layer, thinning the surface of the skin.

Salicylic Acid is antibacterial and even though salicylic acid seems to be more powerful than glycolic acid it actually has anti-inflammatory action on the skin as well, making this a perfect ingredient of choice when you are prone to breakouts.

Salicylic acid is oil soluble, this is great because it can actually penetrate the pores and remove the debris in them that causes breakouts. Glycolic acid on the other hand is water-soluble and not as effective for acne, but great for other skin types, which I won’t discuss here.

Any product containing salicylic acid at a concentration of 2% plus will be exfoliating to the skin, anything below this will be antibacterial.

If you are pregnant or breast feeding it is best not to use any product with this ingredient in and using any hydroxy acid product will make your skin become more sensitive to sunlight, this means make sure you wear your sunscreen everyday and reapply when out in the day light.

If you are taking any medically prescribed acne products or are allergic to aspirin, you should not use salicylic acid or any other exfoliating products and I would advise to consult your doctor before starting to implement this ingredient into your skin care routine.

If you have sensitive skin, salicylic acid may irritate it and if you experience any burning or irritation discontinue use, additional information and warnings can be found on the individual skin care products containing salicylic acid.

Salicylic Acid and Dermalogica

Dermalogica has always used a variety of different exfoliation ingredients in their skin care line and it is of no surprise to find that they use salicylic acid in their main acne range dermalogica medibac.

Below you will find the dermalogica skin care products that contain salicylic acid, I have tried to list as many of them as possible off the top of my head, I hope I have not missed any out, but it’s interesting to see the percentages and you can work out how effective the product is going to be at exfoliating the pores with salicylic acid or if it’s used just for it’s antibacterial benefits.

Please bear in mind that some of the below products have different hydroxy acids in them such as lactic acid or papain, to work in different ways on the skin and I have not listed all of the ingredients here only the Salicylic Acid content.

Get Your Skin Ready For Spring!

Getting Skin Ready For Spring
Spring Time Ready!

With The Warmer Season Coming Upon Us – What is the Best Way To Get Your Skin Ready For Spring?

Your skin changes through out the seasons, as winter approaches the best thing is to change to a more hydrating moisturiser to combat moisture loss, but in Spring you really need to do the opposite. When the weather starts to get warmer I like to have a course of peels, spring is a perfect time of year to refresh your skin and “spring clean” as such and a course of peels keeps my skin in shape for the season. It is also a really good time to update your skin care at home routine and checking that your exfoliant and moisturiser is still right for your skin

Exfoliation is important throughout the year, but in the spring your skin care should be taken up a notch to get rid of any dry, flaky skin patches you have had during the winter period. Exfoliating with dermalogica’s daily microfoliant is a great gentle daily exfoliant you can use that gives instant results, however it is not a true exfoliant, as it really microfoliates the skin. Increase your exfoliation by incorporating dermalogica’s Age Smart Thermafoliant into your routine, that can be used twice a week and is suitable for a more mature skin type, but it not only exfoliates it infuses your skin with vitamins at the same time, so you get a lovely glow (you would not use daily microfoliant on the day of using Thermafoliant – too exfoliating!)

With a good exfoliant in your routine, with the warmer months approaching, you may need to change to a lesser hydrating moisturiser, the sheer moisture range by dermalogica is great because it is light hydration (in between active moist and skin smoothing cream), can be tinted or untinted and has an SPF15 sunscreen in it.

Make sure you are drinking enough water, remember a minimum of eight glasses of water a day, helping you to remove toxins in the body and flush out your system. With your body on display more in the spring than the winter, a total body overhaul may be your thing, however to get a sexy, hydrated smooth body, I find using dermalogica’s body hydrating cream great, it’s light, smells great and lightly exfoliates the skin leaving it feeling really smooth.

Four Causes of Acne

The Four Major Causes of Acne

Stop Hiding From Your Breakouts

Many people suffer with acne these days, it use to be that you would only suffer with breakouts in your teens, but I am finding that more and more adults are suffering with acne and one of the major factors is from stress. It’s not nice being in your thirties (or whatever age) having pimples. Acne can cause people to suffer with depression, embarrassment and lowered self-esteem.

The cause of acne on the skin can be broken down into four causes.

Dead Skin Cell Build Up

  • Dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, that are not removed can lead to a build up and clog the follicles. The dead skin cells mix with sebum (oil) and bacteria, making it harder for the cells to be removed. (You can see why we all need to exfoliate twice a week).

Bacteria

  • Bacteria is found naturally inside our hair follicles, but the problems start when the bacteria gets out of balance and start to irritate the hair follicle and cause inflammation, this is why are breakouts can hurt when you feel them develop and sometimes they can be really angry and red.

Oil

  • Hormones play a part on the product of sebum (oil) on our skin. When hormones get out of balance, or when we are stressed, more sebum can be produced

Hair Follicle

  • Hair follicles that have nice thick hairs, make it easy for sebum to been drawn up to the surface of the skin. If hair follicles are thinner or missing, sebum cannot be drawn out of the follicle as quickly and stays in the follicle mixing with dead skin cells forming a pimple. Hair follicle thickness is genetic, no product can fix this, however learning about the parts of the acne cycle that leads to break outs, you can minimise breakouts and be more in control of your skin condition.

The first step in the acne prevention cycle is to have a really good cleansing routine. A great way to cleanse your skin and remove all dirt and excess sebum of your skin is being your cleanse with precleanse.
