Sensitive Skin 101 – Why Using a Dermalogica Cleanser Will Help Improve Your Skin

Cleansing Sensitive skin with Dermalogica

Cleansing Your Skin the Right Way with Dermalogica Cleansers

There Has Never Been a More Important Time to Use a Professional Cleanser Such as Dermalogica on Your Skin to Keep Sensitivity to a Minimum!

There seems to be more and more clients coming to the skin care centre showing signs of sensitivity on their skin. Sensitive skin in fact affects millions of people and that is why there are so many products on the market all claiming to help.

There are really four main types of sensitive skin: – acne, rosacea, burning and stinging and contact dermatitis along with allergies and irritants. It is not surprising that in some parts of the world air borne, pollutants are more prevalent and skin sensitivity is higher.

All sensitivity has one thing in common and that is inflammation but because sensitivity has different causes they need to be treated differently and by specific ingredients. Sometimes by just cleansing the skin incorrectly can be just enough to set the skin up for sensitivity. If the skin is stripped of its natural protective barrier it can become sensitised to any product that you apply.

Generally soap if it is not of the correct pH, can give your skin such as intense cleanse that your entire natural protective barrier disappears too. Using the correct cleanser is a very important first step in your skincare routine and this is where the product ingredients are really important.

The majority of foaming cleansers and soaps de-fat and remove oil from the skin. Fortunately Dermalogica have a fantastic foaming cleanser called special cleansing gel and this is made using an natural foaming ingredient called Quillaja Saponaris and this gently removes impurities and excess oils without over drying the skin but leaving a super clean surface.

Dermalogica also have another cleanser for those of us who enjoy using a more creamy cleanser and is fantastic for environmentally sensitised skin. Ultracalming Cleanser is an extremely gentle gel-cream cleanser that can be rinsed off or gently removed with tissue. Dermalogica Ultracalming cleanser can also be used to remove eye and lip makeup and leave no irritating residue and protects the skin’s natural lipid barrier.

If you have acne, inflammation and sensitivity you must treat the sensitivity first before addressing the acne as your skin could become so sensitised by using incorrect products that in the end your skin could flare up to anything you apply.

Salicylic Acid is a fabulous ingredient for acne prone skin as it stimulates natural exfoliation, helping to clear impacted follicles and minimise acne formation. Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash cleanser is a natural foaming cleanser that includes other ingredients that gently calm inflammation, clear skin and help prevent future breakouts.

Oily skin is a skin that has excess oil production and we can make this condition worse by stripping the skin of oils every time we cleanse, as the skin then thinks it needs to make even more oil to replace the oil that has been removed. When the skin is constantly stripped of oil and harsh products applied it can become sensitised too.

A far better way of cleansing oily skin is to use Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser which has water soluble bentonite and kaolin clays with purifying botanical extracts and refreshing menthol to remove excess oils and refine the skin’s texture.

Dermal Clay Cleanser is a skin perfecting formula that provides deep cleansing for oily, congested skin and contains naturally astringent plant extracts that help prevent future breakouts.

So the next time you cleanse your skin check the ingredients that you are using and ensure you are using the correct ones for your skin condition.

How Stress Shows Up in Your Face!

How Stress Can Alter Your Skin

Famous for making necks tight, heads ache and stomachs upset, stress is becoming a recognised trigger to redness, itching, burning and flare-ups commonly classified as skin sensitisation.

And it’s a growing phenomenon: the American Academy of Dermatology reports up to 50% of the U.S population experience some form of sensitive skin. Sensitised skin can be triggered in any person regardless of racial background or skin colour. Excessive exposire to skin-damaging environmental factors like chemical pollutants are frequent sensitisers. For example: Approximately 36% of the population in China has declared themselves as “sensitive”, a condition that may in fact be attributed to the high level of pollution in both rural and urban parts of this region.

What happens on the surface is stemming from a biological reaction in the body: inflammation. Inflammation is the immune system’s (immunogenic) response to infection and foregin invaders. just as irritating chemicals and excess exfoliation can trigger inflammation and red stinging, itching skin, researchers recognise neurogenic inflammation (stemming from the nervous system), is also triggered by emotional and physical stress. It yeilds the same red, stinging, itching response and could even be responsible for severe skin disorders including psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis.

As science explores these multiple pathways, Dermalogica continues to research ingredients to deliver serious relief for sensitised skin.

Scientifically Speaking

Hydrocortisone is a commonly used steroid that helps reduce inflammation. It’s purpose, however is to provide short-term relief, not long-term control of itching and redness. In addition, Hydrocortisone has the potential drawback of thinning skin and when used long-term, skin can build up a resistance and require stronger steroids as a result.

Opt instead for powerful ingredients that soothe, cool, reduce redness and impact the multiple pathways behind inflammation for better control of flare-ups.

Three Key Ingredients Include:-

  • Avena Sativa (Oat Kernal) extracts: Rich in avenanthramides, which have been widely studied and proven to have natural anti-irritant and anti-redness properties.
  • Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) extract and Bisabolol (derived from Chamomile): Work synergistically to help reduce inflammation induced redness and irritation.
  • Boerhavia Diffusa (Red Hogweed) Root Extract: Targets neurogenic inflammation while soothing properties restore skin to a normal sensitivity level, providing immediate and long-lasting effects.

You Can Find These Ingredients in the New Dermalogica UltraCalming Range.

NEW! Dermalogica’s Ultracalming Sensitive Skin Range

Dermalogica’s Ultracalming Range

Dermalogica Ultra Calming Sensitive Range

Dermalogica's Sensitive Skin Range Now Including The Ultracalming Complex

Dermalogica’s newly updated sensitive skin range has been updated and is about to be released across Australia. I am so excited about this new ultracalming range because this updated version is even better than the previous range, which I think works brilliantly. Dermalogica and the researchers of  The International Dermal Institute have been studying the effects of sensitive skin over a few years and this new ultra calming update incorporates all there latest findings. Lets have a look at the new products and how they have improved upon the old sensitive skin range.

What’s New in Dermalogica’s Ultracalming?

Dermalogica have designed a new sensitive skin complex called, you guessed it! Ultracalming Complex, getting rid of their older Anti-ozonate Complex, with new ingredients and new technologies and new research. The new ultracalming complex uses powerful ingredients to help control current inflammation and prevent inflammation but also prevent neurogenic and immunogenic responses.

What are neurogenic and immunogenic responses?

A Neurogenic Inflammation Response is triggered by your immune system by the nervous system. When your skin is under attack and the irritant activates the nerve sensors, it causes substances to be released into the skin causing redness, itchiness and soreness.

An Immunogenic inflammation Response is what happens to your skin when it’s under assault, basically alerting your skin’s cells to fight off the unwanted invader because of this your skin triggers an allergic reaction and can cause redness, soreness and itchiness.

The UltraCalming Range

Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Range works! Each product has been specifically designed to the triggers of sensitivity and flare ups. The range in general helps

  • To calm inflammation on your skin
  • Soothe any redness, irritation or itchiness you may experience
  • Control the effects of the Neurogenic and Immunogenic Responses
  • Reinforce The Skin’s Barrier Layer and surface lipids.
  • Hydrate the skin’s tissues and stimulate new ceramides and cholesterol formation.

The range consists of new products to the range and also updated products. Dermalogica has reformulated the popular Barrier Repair which now include the UltraCalming Complex and they have also reformulated Soothing Protection Spray (and this is now called UltraCalming Mist) and UltraCalming Cleanser, be on the look out for more information from me and my experiences on these new formulations.

The New Exciting Products are UltraCalming Serum and UltraCalming Relief Masque!

The UltraCalming Complex is in every one of the UltraCalming Products and it actually is fantastic for controlling inflammation including the neuro inflammation and immuno inflammation! The actual ingredient that helps to control neurogenic inflammation is Red Hogweed extract, the complex also consists various other ingredients that provide serious relief for sensitive skin. My absolute favourite has to be the UltraCalming Serum, not only does this serum have the highest concentration of the UltraCalming Complex, it also has an amazing new peptide that is so clever, it actually restores the skin so it’s “less reactive”. In fact every body should have this product so when they get any irritation they can apply this light-weight serum to calm the skin and reduce any flare ups.

The Ambulance Masque – Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Relief Masque

This masque is a very powerful treatment providing relief for sensitive skin, it uses the power of colloidal oatmeal along with the UltraCalming Complex and anti-inflammatories that work together to deliver a cocktail of ingredients to the skin giving immediate relief and restoring the balance of the skin – A must have masque if you are sensitive or have the occasional sensitivity outbreak.

The new dermalogica range is versatile, you don’t need to use the whole sensitive range if you don’t want to you could use the serum under your normal dermalogica moisturiser or just use the cleanser, that’s what I like about the range, but the whole range is fantastic, stay Tuned for more information about Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Sensitive Skin range from me.
