Sensitive Skin 101 – Why Using a Dermalogica Cleanser Will Help Improve Your Skin

Cleansing Sensitive skin with Dermalogica

Cleansing Your Skin the Right Way with Dermalogica Cleansers

There Has Never Been a More Important Time to Use a Professional Cleanser Such as Dermalogica on Your Skin to Keep Sensitivity to a Minimum!

There seems to be more and more clients coming to the skin care centre showing signs of sensitivity on their skin. Sensitive skin in fact affects millions of people and that is why there are so many products on the market all claiming to help.

There are really four main types of sensitive skin: – acne, rosacea, burning and stinging and contact dermatitis along with allergies and irritants. It is not surprising that in some parts of the world air borne, pollutants are more prevalent and skin sensitivity is higher.

All sensitivity has one thing in common and that is inflammation but because sensitivity has different causes they need to be treated differently and by specific ingredients. Sometimes by just cleansing the skin incorrectly can be just enough to set the skin up for sensitivity. If the skin is stripped of its natural protective barrier it can become sensitised to any product that you apply.

Generally soap if it is not of the correct pH, can give your skin such as intense cleanse that your entire natural protective barrier disappears too. Using the correct cleanser is a very important first step in your skincare routine and this is where the product ingredients are really important.

The majority of foaming cleansers and soaps de-fat and remove oil from the skin. Fortunately Dermalogica have a fantastic foaming cleanser called special cleansing gel and this is made using an natural foaming ingredient called Quillaja Saponaris and this gently removes impurities and excess oils without over drying the skin but leaving a super clean surface.

Dermalogica also have another cleanser for those of us who enjoy using a more creamy cleanser and is fantastic for environmentally sensitised skin. Ultracalming Cleanser is an extremely gentle gel-cream cleanser that can be rinsed off or gently removed with tissue. Dermalogica Ultracalming cleanser can also be used to remove eye and lip makeup and leave no irritating residue and protects the skin’s natural lipid barrier.

If you have acne, inflammation and sensitivity you must treat the sensitivity first before addressing the acne as your skin could become so sensitised by using incorrect products that in the end your skin could flare up to anything you apply.

Salicylic Acid is a fabulous ingredient for acne prone skin as it stimulates natural exfoliation, helping to clear impacted follicles and minimise acne formation. Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash cleanser is a natural foaming cleanser that includes other ingredients that gently calm inflammation, clear skin and help prevent future breakouts.

Oily skin is a skin that has excess oil production and we can make this condition worse by stripping the skin of oils every time we cleanse, as the skin then thinks it needs to make even more oil to replace the oil that has been removed. When the skin is constantly stripped of oil and harsh products applied it can become sensitised too.

A far better way of cleansing oily skin is to use Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser which has water soluble bentonite and kaolin clays with purifying botanical extracts and refreshing menthol to remove excess oils and refine the skin’s texture.

Dermal Clay Cleanser is a skin perfecting formula that provides deep cleansing for oily, congested skin and contains naturally astringent plant extracts that help prevent future breakouts.

So the next time you cleanse your skin check the ingredients that you are using and ensure you are using the correct ones for your skin condition.

Do you have sensitive skin? What cleanser do you use? Let me know my commenting below on your experience with Dermalogica Cleansers or other products for that matter!

Help, Breakout Alert! – The 101 Emergency Dermalogica Breakout Procedure!

Yes it always happens when you’ve got an important date, an interview or wedding day and the night before a mountainous zit appears.

The first thought that enters our head is “exterminate it” and you may even be tempted to squeeze it to a pulp. Unfortunately that would be the worst case scenarios for this, as not only may you end up with scaring/dermal pigment occurring but you could also spread the bacteria and another zit is born.

The best thing to do is to try and control our urge to kill it with our fingers/instruments and treat it effectively with ingredients that will not only eliminate the bacteria but accelerates the breakout clearing.

Dermalogica have a great little power pack called Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster which is specially formulated as a spot treatment eliminating the breakout causing bacteria in the follicles and helps clear skin while soothing irritation and regulating sebum production – this quickly dries out breakouts too.

Special Clearing Booster does contain Benzoyl Peroxide and if you are sensitive to this ingredient you would be probably better to use Dermalogica’s Concealing Spot Treatment as this does not contain Benzoyl Peroxide.

Dermalogica Concealing Spot Treatment can be used during the day over a dermalogica moisturiser. It has a natural looking tint which conceals and a host of fast acting ingredients to quickly dry up and heal breakouts and clearing congestion to help prevent future breakouts.

At night Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel is a winner (this product is an update of Dermalogica’s Medicated Clearing Gel). Apply a thin layer all over the area of concern and allow to absorb as this product will help to clear skin, calm inflammation and prevent future breakouts by reducing excess sebum, removing congestion in the pore and eliminating bacteria.

Well I have explained all you can do at home but if you want to boost up your treatment take yourself into a Dermalogica Skin Care Centre and have a Microzone Spot Clearing Treatment, or if you are located in Adelaide, you can always have a treatment with me at my Day Spa Adelaide Salon.

You can check out the Dermalogica Microzone Treatments Video Below

High Frequency is great for breakouts and if you do have a spot clearing treatment you may get the high frequency performed by a professional during your treatment. It works by reducing inflammation, eliminating toxins, killing bacteria and sterilising the breakout area – this is fantastic for zapping the blemish away.

Get Clearer Skin With Every Wash!

Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Skin Wash

Dermalogica Medibac

Clearing Skin Wash - A Great Choice For Inflammed Acne Skin Types

Dermalogica Medibac Clearing Skin Wash – Your Going to Love it! – If you are prone to more than just the odd breakout and you find that your acne is worse during times of stress or hormonal fluctuations then you are going to love dermalogica medibacclearing skin wash. This dermalogica cleanser works at unclogging your pores, reducing excess oil flow, reducing bacteria in the follicles and calming inflammation and irritation from breakouts, basically working on the four main triggers of acne.

The dermalogica acnerange (medibac) is a system designed to treat your skin using a range of products that work by layering different ingredients on your skin to get a better result for treating acne.

Clearing Skin Wash is a gel cleanser that foams up when you add water and it makes your skin feel really clean and fresh after every wash.

Why Would You Use This Dermalogica Cleanser Compared to Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel?

This is a question I get asked all the time, Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash contains salicylic acid at a 0.5% strength this is enough for it to go to work on blocked pores and clean then out and effectively remove traces of make up.

When you start to use this cleanser it can feel tingly on the skin, as your skin gets use to the active ingredients this sensation will go away. Make sure you don’t use this product around your eyes (yes- it will sting!) and it’s not ideal if you have very sensitive skin. However this is a fantastic cleanser to use if you suffer with inflammed, red, sore breakouts and clogged pores. The salicylic acid will help reduce the clogging, reduce future breakouts and exfoliate your skin, not to mention remove surface excess oil.

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is an effective cleanser but not specific for acne prone skin types, although it is fine for you to use.

Dermalogica Medibac Cleanser For The Body

Because this dermalogica cleanser is a gel, you will find that it’s perfect to use on your body on areas prone to breakouts such as your back or chest and if you use it with dermalogica’s buffing cloth you are going to get twice the exfoliation.

A lot of skin care therapists I find do not recommend this dermalogica cleanser as often as they should, sticking to the “safe-choice” special cleansing gel because of fear of drying people’s skin out. But I find that if you do suffer with consistent breakouts you really need to use a cleanser that is going to treat this specific condition (acne) and use all of the specific dermalogica acne products to see a great improvement in your skin. If you find yourself under a lot of stress and your breakouts are becoming more prominent this is a perfect cleanser for you to use.

How to Use Clearing Skin Wash

The secret for using clearing skin wash is to use only a small amount (a pea-sized amount) into your wet hands and “lather” in your hands, so it starts to foam-up. It’s really important that you do lather the cleanser well and remove all traces off your face – as not foaming it well enough will cause your skin to dry out!! This has been a problem for some people who have experienced irritation in the past, or have used it around your eyes (don’t).

While cleansing your skin make sure you concentrate on your breakout/clogged skin prone areas (most likely forehead, chin and nose). Don’t use this cleanser if you have particular sensitive skin and for best results use dermalogica precleanse first before you use this cleanser, to get a deeper level of clean.

Dermalogica Clearing Skin Wash Benefits

This really is a four-in-one dermalogica cleanser that targets your breakouts.

  • It works on controlling the bacteria on your skin that causes acne with the ingredients Tea Tree Oil and Eucalyptus
  • It Help soothe irritation from painful inflammed pimples with calming camphor and soothing menthol
  • A combination of acne fighting botanicals such as licorice, bergamot and lemon help to prevent future breakouts.
  • Salicylic Acid unclogs pores and minimises blackhead formation and pimples.

I have found dermalogica clearing skin wash to be a good choice for me when I am prone to breakouts and when they go I change back to my normal cleanser, so you may find like me that you do not need to use it all the time.

Dermalogica Medibac Sebum Clearing Masque Ingredients

Sebum Clearing Masque

This is What Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque Looks Like

There are four main triggers what need to be addressed when treating acne (excess oil production, bacteria, dead skin cell build up and inflammation) and this masque targets all of these triggers at once, that is why I think this masque is fantastic and you really need to use it if you suffer with acne-prone skin, in fact you can use this dermalogica medibac masque up to three times a week on clean, cleansed skin.

Excess Oil Production

As I explained already Kaolin and Bentonite clays absorb excess oil on your skin without stripping it.

It’s pretty amazing that there are actual ingredients out there that regulate oil flow in the skin and that is exactly what Niacinamide, Zinc Gluconate and Caffeine do and as a bonus also help to reduce bacteria.

Bacteria Reduction

When you experience whiteheads and painful swelling from pimples this is thanks to bacteria, dermalogica sebum clearing masque uses Spiraea Ulmaria Extract and Cinnamon Bark work to inhibit bacteria by stimulating your own natural anti-bacterial agents in your skin.

Reduce Inflammation

What’s dermalogica without its calming properties! This dermalogica medibac masque also uses Panthenol and Horse Chestnut and Liquorice to soothe inflammation in your skin from the irritation of breakouts with the amazing calming capabilities of Oats and Bisabolol.

Excess Dead Skin Cells

Dermalogica have also added Salicylic Acid to also help unclog the pores on your skin, leaving your with a cleaner, smoother and clearer skin after use – It really is a great masque.

Dermalogica’s Medibac Masque is more than just a masque it’s a treatment-skin-restoring-wonder which I would recommend to anyone who suffers with breakouts and oil skin conditions.

Breakout Busting Beauty Sleep With Dermalogica’s Overnight Clearing Gel

Overnight Clearing Gel

Breakouts Be Gone with Dermalogica's Overnight Clearing Gel

Dermalogica Medibac Overnight Clearing Gel

You know I really am into acne at the moment  it’s my “skin condition of the month” so to speak! So you can tell from my posts I have been exciting myself with everything and anything to do with acne and also retrying all the dermalogica medibac products – Sometimes I forget how good they are and a refresher is good for all of us. Anyway today I am excited about dermalogica’s overnight clearing gel, yes it’s from the dermalogica medibac range and a lot of people go nuts over this acne-busting miracle in a jar, so I decided to try it out, give it my opinion and find out the nittie-grittie information about it.

Sleep Soundly, Sleep Peacefully Knowing Your Breakouts are Being Tackled!

The best thing I love about dermalogica overnight clearing gel is how incredibly soothing it is to your skin, normally alot of specific acne ranges dry the skin out, but overnight clearing gel is infused with hylauronic acid, which provides incredible oil-free hydration and increase elasticity. It’s terrible when you get a big breakout that’s so sore and inflamed, it can hurt so much!

Another reason why I love dermalogica’s medibac range is how they always put calming ingredients into each and every product and it’s no different here with the added properties of Green Tea (Green Tea is a great antioxidant that calms inflammation in the skin). This is so perfect for any adult sufferer of acne, it really helps calm and soothe the skin and with many adult acne sufferers also having dehydrated skin issues, hylauronic acid is a perfect choice to have in this acne overnight treatment – it’s a must have product, before I have even told you anything about the acne fighting benefits!

This is a night time treatment – hence this means you have to remove your make up at night time before you apply this! – I know people who don’t!! Anyway using this at night time means you get an average of 8 hours of beauty acne-fighting sleep and hopefully when you wake up your acne will be looking better. Salicylic Acid is the unclogging ingredient in overnight clearing gel – a 2% concentration Salicylic Acid is so good at unclogging the pores and removing dead skin cells and any pesky blackheads that are hard to budge.

Dermalogica have also boosted this even more with there formulated blend of Niacinamide, Biotin, Zinc Gluconate, Yeast Extract, Caffeine and Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid – a mouthful of ingredients! These all work together to amazingly reduce the overactive oil glands (less oil, means less clogging). They are all wonderfully soothing to your skin and help calm irritated breakouts.

Tea Tree, Spiraea Ulmaria and Rosemary Extracts also encourage your skin’s natural peptides to fight bacteria – without Benzoyl Peroxide! That means less breakouts for you without irritation.

Key Ingredients of Dermalogica Medibac Overnight Clearing Gel

As you should be well aware of by now, dermalogica medibac range works on the four triggers of acne (thanks to my constant attention to this fact!) and it’s no difference here with the key ingredients dermalogica use in overnight clearing gel.

  • Salicylic Acid – Remove Excess Dead Skin Cells
  • Niacinamide, Biotin, Zinc Gluconate, Yeast Extract, Caffeine and Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid – Reduce overactive oil glands
  • Tea Tree and Spiraea Ulmaria – Reduces bacteria in the skin
  • Green Tea – Soothe Irritation
  • Hyluaronic Acid – Oil-Free Light Hydration

Adults and Acne

The number one cause of acne in adults is from stress. Stress triggers breakouts and oil-flow production, but because of this breakouts take longer to heal, your skin maybe more prone to sensitivity and redness from breakouts last longer. The dermalogica medibac range I think is fantastic and I have seen great results on people’s skin who use the range. Dermalogica medibac system has been designed to layer different ingredients on to the skin at different times to restore skin to optimum skin health, this is why I would recommend that you use the clearing mattifier into your skin routine in the morning (another brilliant acne product), to get maximum breakout reduction.

Also This dermalogica product is paraben-free!

Benzoyl Peroxide

What is BenzoylPeroxide?

Benzoyl Peroxide is an ingredient that is used in many acne products. It is a popular ingredient because it removes the bacteria known as p.acnes that cause the red bumps and swelling on your skin, helping to clear your breakouts quickly.

Benzoyl Peroxide was originally used to bleach fabrics (that’s why you may find your towels fading when you use this ingredient!)

There have been many studies on Benzoyl Peroxide all indicating how good it is for killing the bacteriathat causes acne. It also works better than any antibiotic at killing the p.acnes, but what makes Benzoyl Peroxide special is that it produces oxygen (which p.acnes hate) and the bacteria never gets immune to Benzoyl Peroxide. This means that if Benzoyl Peroxide works for you it will continue to work.

Just by using Benzoyl Peroxide for twice a day for five days, studies have shown that the p.acnes will be reduced by 95% (no prescription antibiotic can begin to match the antibacterial effect of benzoyl peroxide).

Although Benzoyl Peroxide is great for acne, you cannot rely on this ingredient alone to be enough to reduce your breakouts, as it only kills the bacteria, it does not clog pores, it does not remove excess oil that means you need to use other products that work on the other triggers of acne at the same time to get clearer skin. Salicylic Acid is a great for unclogging pores, this allows the Benzoyl Peroxideto penetrate and kill off the bacteria. (There is also evidence that Benzoyl Peroxide may control excess oil production).

Dermalogica’s Special Clearing Booster  contains 5% Benzoyl Peroxide and it is to be used as a spot treatment (placed directly on the breakout). Benzoyl Peroxide can be irritating for some skin types, and is best used as a spot treatment it can also make you more sensitive to the sun, so you must wear your sunscreen and reapply during the day.

It’s really important that you cleanse your skin correctly to allow active ingredients to penetrate the skin and work effectively, using something like dermalogica’s special cleansing gel will help to cleanse your skin with stripping it.

Acne can be terrible in fact one of the biggest causes of acne these days is from stress, allowing yourself to de-stress throughout the day, to take time out for yourself is very important, not only will it do you good but also your acne. Remember Benzoyl Perozide is not a cure for acne but it is one way to help reduce your breakouts that is proven to work. I don’t recommend using benzoyl peroxide all over your face, it’s too drying I have seen this so many times in my salons where they have used Benzoyl Peroxide all over there skin and they are sensitized, red, inflammed and there skin is so dry it’s flaking off in sheets.

It really is sad when i see people’s skins like this, as normally I find it’s teenagers and they so hopelessly want to improve there breakouts but because they have built up a reaction, all I can do is help them with the sensitivity of there skin and improve and strengthen the skin’s barrier (where all they want is there acne removed – which is understandable). Only after the skin is strong enough and calmed down can you begin to use acne products again

Anyway What’s Your Thoughts on Benzoyl Peroxide, Do you LOVE it? HATE it? Tell Me What you think or tell me your experiences with it and comment below, I love to hear what you think – Don’t Be Shy!!!!

The Miraculous effect of Dermalogica’s Special Clearing Booster

Special Clearing Booster

Marvellous Special Clearing Booster - Heals Pimples Quickly

Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster Works Like Magic

Dermalogica Medibac Special Clearing Booster is great for healing breakouts quickly and is especially useful when you have an event or an important date (the sheer thought of the event can cause you to break out) and thankfully dermalogica’s special clearing booster is a potent acne killing product that will quickly eradicate any pimple. Dermalogica Special Clearing Booster has been a wonder product of mine for how quickly I have seen it heal my client’s breakouts. Developed with Benzoyl Peroxide a 5% potent strength, it’s capable of killing off the p.acnes that thrive in the follicles that cause the red bumps on your skin, by reducing the painful swelling and redness. If you have a particularly bad pimple apply a good amount of it, to only the affected breakout when you go to bed, by the time you wake up the Benzoyl Peroxide would have reduced the swelling – it’s Absolutely Marvellous!

Special Clearing Booster Acne Fighting Ingredients

Besides the bacteria killing Benzoyl Peroxide in this formula dermalogica have included their exclusive Alginated Zinc Triplex which is in many of their dermalogica medibac products. Alginated Zinc Triplex is a combination of hydrolysed algin and zinc sulphate. These have a good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect on your skin. It also interferes with the action of the five alpha reductase enzyme process and this has been shown to reduce sebum by approximately 26 per cent – fascinating stuff!

Tea Tree Oil and Zinc Sulfate are also used in Special Clearing Booster both for there bacteria reducing abilities. Tea Tree Oil also is a great anti-inflammatory, and Zinc Sulfate helps to regulate sebum production in the follicle.

Most acne products can be irritating on the skin with Special Clearing Booster it is to be applied only to the affected breakout, but with everything dermalogica designs they always add calming ingredients to help reduce any irritation to the skin and that’s no different with this product with the added Chamomile Extract and Calendula both incredibly soothing ingredients that helps to calm the inflamed breakout and reduce the size of the pimple.

The whole formula is blended in an herbal base of Lavender, Calendula, German Chamomile, Linden and St.John’s Wort. These purifying plant extracts contain essential oils and phytochemicals that not only soothe and calm irritated skin, but also dissolve impaction plugs while moisturising dehydrated tissues.

A great on-the-spot treatment for those annoying pimples that quickly heal breakouts without over-drying and irritation. This is one of those products you cannot live without if you suffer with breakouts (not recommended for sensitive skin types or anyone allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide). The actual bottle will last two years once you have opened it, you only need a small amount and the bottle does last a really long time.

Salicylic Acid – The Hydroxy Acid of Choice For Anyone Who Suffers With Acne

Dermalogica Peptides

Dermalogica's Powerful Peptides

Salicylic Acid for Breakouts

Salicylic acid can be found in many over-the-counter beauty products these days. You will normally find salicylic acid in products for breakouts because it is an effective hydroxy acid for acne and has the ability to reduce the spots and bumps on the skin.

Salicylic Acid is found in Willow Bark and it is a Beta Hydroxy Acid(BHA). It works differently to popular glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid, by continually shedding the dead skin cell build up layer by layer, thinning the surface of the skin.

Salicylic Acid is antibacterial and even though salicylic acid seems to be more powerful than glycolic acid it actually has anti-inflammatory action on the skin as well, making this a perfect ingredient of choice when you are prone to breakouts.

Salicylic acid is oil soluble, this is great because it can actually penetrate the pores and remove the debris in them that causes breakouts. Glycolic acid on the other hand is water-soluble and not as effective for acne, but great for other skin types, which I won’t discuss here.

Any product containing salicylic acid at a concentration of 2% plus will be exfoliating to the skin, anything below this will be antibacterial.

If you are pregnant or breast feeding it is best not to use any product with this ingredient in and using any hydroxy acid product will make your skin become more sensitive to sunlight, this means make sure you wear your sunscreen everyday and reapply when out in the day light.

If you are taking any medically prescribed acne products or are allergic to aspirin, you should not use salicylic acid or any other exfoliating products and I would advise to consult your doctor before starting to implement this ingredient into your skin care routine.

If you have sensitive skin, salicylic acid may irritate it and if you experience any burning or irritation discontinue use, additional information and warnings can be found on the individual skin care products containing salicylic acid.

Salicylic Acid and Dermalogica

Dermalogica has always used a variety of different exfoliation ingredients in their skin care line and it is of no surprise to find that they use salicylic acid in their main acne range dermalogica medibac.

Below you will find the dermalogica skin care products that contain salicylic acid, I have tried to list as many of them as possible off the top of my head, I hope I have not missed any out, but it’s interesting to see the percentages and you can work out how effective the product is going to be at exfoliating the pores with salicylic acid or if it’s used just for it’s antibacterial benefits.

Please bear in mind that some of the below products have different hydroxy acids in them such as lactic acid or papain, to work in different ways on the skin and I have not listed all of the ingredients here only the Salicylic Acid content.

Four Causes of Acne

The Four Major Causes of Acne

Stop Hiding From Your Breakouts

Many people suffer with acne these days, it use to be that you would only suffer with breakouts in your teens, but I am finding that more and more adults are suffering with acne and one of the major factors is from stress. It’s not nice being in your thirties (or whatever age) having pimples. Acne can cause people to suffer with depression, embarrassment and lowered self-esteem.

The cause of acne on the skin can be broken down into four causes.

Dead Skin Cell Build Up

  • Dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, that are not removed can lead to a build up and clog the follicles. The dead skin cells mix with sebum (oil) and bacteria, making it harder for the cells to be removed. (You can see why we all need to exfoliate twice a week).

Bacteria

  • Bacteria is found naturally inside our hair follicles, but the problems start when the bacteria gets out of balance and start to irritate the hair follicle and cause inflammation, this is why are breakouts can hurt when you feel them develop and sometimes they can be really angry and red.

Oil

  • Hormones play a part on the product of sebum (oil) on our skin. When hormones get out of balance, or when we are stressed, more sebum can be produced

Hair Follicle

  • Hair follicles that have nice thick hairs, make it easy for sebum to been drawn up to the surface of the skin. If hair follicles are thinner or missing, sebum cannot be drawn out of the follicle as quickly and stays in the follicle mixing with dead skin cells forming a pimple. Hair follicle thickness is genetic, no product can fix this, however learning about the parts of the acne cycle that leads to break outs, you can minimise breakouts and be more in control of your skin condition.

The first step in the acne prevention cycle is to have a really good cleansing routine. A great way to cleanse your skin and remove all dirt and excess sebum of your skin is being your cleanse with precleanse.
